Thank You

My friends,

Our race for District H has been an exciting journey. Even though things did not go the way we hoped, I am so proud of the hard-fought, principled campaign we ran and what we’ve accomplished.

I couldn’t have done it without all of you who have shared a journey and a vision with me these past five months: from my dedicated and hardworking volunteers to the community organizers and neighborhood leaders whose support I earned; from those have so generously contributed to my campaign to my loving family and friends. I am truly humbled by the support and encouragement you’ve given me during this campaign.

Running this race—meeting thousands of new people, listening to them and sharing their concerns—has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am reminded of the quote from one of my political heroes that inspired me to run for City Council:

“It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.” -Teddy Roosevelt

The campaign has ended, but my commitment to building a better District H for everyone will not. I believe that, with a commitment to listening to everyone and making everybody’s voice heard, our District has enormous potential for growth and prosperity. I urge you all to join me in pushing our ideas forward. I firmly believe that if we continue the incredible civic involvement we achieved during the campaign, we can accomplish great things for our District and for our City.

HCYD Endorses Maverick Welsh

The Harris County Young Democrats endorsed one of their fellow members, former school teacher and City Hall Chief of Staff Maverick Welsh at their monthly meeting tonight.

“Maverick’s experience as a teacher and a community organizer make him uniquely qualified to connect with the young people of District H.”  according to Dave Rosen, HCYD’s Director of Development.  “Additionally, he is the only candidate ready to hit the ground running on day one, getting results for every resident of District H.” 

“Thank you to HCYD for your overwhelming vote of confidence,” Welsh said. “I have always worked hard to create opportunities for young people. I look forward to making sure that everyone in District H is represented as a member of City Council.”

Yolanda Navarro-Flores Endorses Maverick Welsh for District H!

Please join the Maverick Welsh campaign in welcoming the support of Yolanda Navarro-Flores.

“Maverick Welsh will be a great city council member. He is sensitive to our Latino needs and issues…his door will be open to black, brown, and white. Maverick will not put the personal political agenda of others before the interests of the people.”

Yolanda is a distinguished resident of District H, serving on the HCC Board and having served in the Texas House of Representatives. She and her family have a proud history of standing for the people of our community.

“Today, I offer my endorsement to Maverick Welsh,” Yolanda said Tuesday. “My endorsement is for change and responsiveness for our District, not the same politics of the “patron/patrona” hand-picking the candidate for the people. No more status quo politics. My endorsement is for Maverick Welsh—he represents hope for a new and better future for all people in District H and our great city.”

Yolanda and her supporters ran a hard-fought campaign in the special election. Now we look forward to joining forces and continuing to gain momentum until the runoff!

Thank You! On to the Runoff!

Thanks to your votes, your hard work, and your generous contributions, the race for City Council District H is a dead heat.

Saturday’s election demonstrated that you want a City Council Member who talks to you, listens to you, and engages you.

Because of our hard work out in the district engaging with District H residents, our support has grown from a small grassroots movement to a dead heat in an upcoming runoff election. As we’ve knocked on doors and made calls to more and more voters across the district, our support has continued to grow.

I promise that I’ll run my council office the same way I run my campaign: by reaching out to everyone in the district and listening to what people have to say. Nobody should tell you how to vote or what to think.

The issues that we face in District H—rising crime, aging infrastructure, and soaring electricity rates—can only be solved by this approach. Business as usual isn’t going to cut it.

Again, thanks for all your hard work and support. Leave your yard signs in the ground, and come help us work for experienced, engaged leadership in District H.

Expanding Recycling & Green Initiatives

Dear Friend,

As I talk to residents across District H about the May 9 special election, I find that Democrats, Republicans and Independents share many common concerns. A great number of my fellow Houstonians are concerned about recent spikes in petty crime, rising electricity bills, and repairing our vital infrastructure.

I hear from voters across the district who care about environmental issues, too. Clean air and better recycling options should be enjoyed by everyone in Houston. As your City Council Member, I will push the City to do everything possible to make our air healthier and our skies cleaner, for the health of our children and the beauty of the places we live. I also want to share some news about an exciting new program going on right now in Houston to encourage recycling.

Houston recently launched an automated, single-stream recycling program to around 10,000 homes across the city. Some of the neighborhoods are right here in District H. Single-stream recycling makes recycling easier, requiring no sorting and only one recycling bin. So, if you live in East or West Lindale Park or the Old Sixth Ward please take advantage of your opportunity to help our City recycle as much as possible.

Everyone in Houston deserves this cutting-edge convenience. I will fight to get easy, automated recycling for ALL of District H.

Maverick Welsh Receives Endorsements from Two Major Democratic Groups

(HOUSTON)—Two major Democratic groups have endorsed Maverick Welsh this week for Houston City Council District H in the May 9th Special Election.

The Houston Black American Democrats (HBAD) gave their endorsement at their monthly meeting on Thursday, March 12, making HBAD the latest major Democratic group to endorse Maverick Welsh for District H. The Houston Stonewall Young Democrats (HSYD) also endorsed Maverick at their monthly meeting on March 10th.

“I’m honored to accept the endorsement of these diverse organizations,” Maverick said. “Receiving the support of these two groups emphasizes my ability to reach out to everyone in District H. I appreciate their confidence in my commitment to make everyone’s voice heard in City Hall.”

HBAD cited Maverick’s experience as a teacher and public servant in making their decision. “Mr. Welsh’s career as a public school teacher, community leader, and public servant makes him the most qualified and capable candidate in this race,” said Wanda Frederick, member of the HBAD screening committee. “Our community needs a City Council Member who has the experience to start working for us from day one.”

Brandon Webb, President of the HSYD, said “The Houston Stonewall Young Democrats are certain that Mr. Welsh’s deep understanding of city affairs, along with his passion for the needs of the district’s constituents, more than qualify him” to represent District H.

HSYD Endorses Maverick Welsh

The Houston Stonewall Young Democrats has endorsed Maverick Welsh! From the press release:

The Houston Stonewall Young Democrats have endorsed Maverick Welsh for Houston City Council District H in the May 9th special election. The Houston Stonewall Young Democrats (HSYD), a group of Houston area young progressives ages 14 to 40 whose focus is to educate the LGBT community about the issues affecting them, made the endorsements at their monthly meeting last night…

Shaun Nelson, HSYD Vice President of Political Affairs, stated, “Maverick’s experience in both teaching and public service brings a unique perspective that HSYD fully supports.” [HSYD President Brandon] Webb said “The Houston Stonewall Young Democrats are certain that Mr. Welsh’s deep understanding of city affairs, along with his passion for the needs of the district’s constituents, more than qualify him to carry the banner of front runner in this election,” stated Webb.

Maverick Welsh Receives Houston GLBT Political Caucus Endorsement

(HOUSTON) — The Houston GLBT Political Caucus has endorsed Maverick Welsh for Houston City Council District H in the May 9 Special Election. The Houston GLBT Caucus, the South’s oldest GLBT civil rights organization, made the endorsement at their monthly meeting last night.

“I’m very honored to receive the endorsement of the Caucus,” Maverick said. “District H is a place as diverse as our city. I’m very proud that my qualifications and my commitment to making sure everyone’s voice is heard were recognized by the GLBT community.”

Maverick has been reaching out to all the communities of District H since he began campaigning in late January. “I’m running for City Council because everybody counts. The issues that we face today are important to the future of our city. Whether you were born in our city or found your way here, everybody in District H is concerned about rising crime, soaring electricity rates and how we spend our precious City resources in tough economic times.”

I’ve worked as a Chief of Staff, I’ve run a Council office, I’ve worked with every level of city governement and I’ll be ready to fight for District H the first day in office.”

Neighborhood Protection & Preservation

I want to congratulate the recipients of the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance’s Good Brick Award recognizing excellence in historic preservation.

I’d particularly like to extend congratulations to my former workplace, Reagan High School. Because of our hard work in the successful Transformation Reagan project, the school has been selected as “one of the best renovation[s] in Houston history!”

Because of my advocacy for historic preservation, the Houston Archaeological and Historic Commission (HAHC) recently appointed me to one of its subcommittees. Last Friday, I attended my first meeting.

I’m working with HAHC to identify more historic structures in need of recognition and preservation, so we can celebrate our city’s beauty and history, and make our neighborhoods even better places to live for everyone.
