Maverick Welsh was born in Laredo, Texas, and grew up in Corpus Christi. He studied Political Science at Texas A&M University in College Station. After earning his degree, Maverick moved to Houston.
TEACHING
Maverick taught U.S. History at Davis High School in the Northside, where he brought his passion for history and our country to his students. More importantly, his students excelled and consistently earned great test scores. Maverick found a new set of opportunities to serve the community at Reagan High School in the Heights. His students continued earning high marks. Maverick put a lot of his nights and weekends into the Transformation Reagan project. Reagan High School is now both a historic landmark and a fully-upgraded learning facility thanks to the hard work of parents, current and former students, teachers, administrators, and community leaders.
Maverick was the very first teacher of U.S. Government at the pioneering KIPP Houston High School. The highly successful Knowledge Is Power Program, developed in Houston, is now being used in high schools across the nation. Maverick always made a point of using new ideas to give every student opportunities to learn. He was consistently recognized for reaching out to every last student in his classroom, such as earning an award for his commitment to educate every child from the Council of Administrators of Special Education. Maverick makes sure everybody is included, listening to all viewpoints and caring about everyone’s needs.
CIVIC LEADERSHIP & PUBLIC SERVICE
Maverick bought his house in Proctor Plaza after teaching in and enjoying the rich culture of District H for years. His enthusiasm for historic preservation and his dedication to the community compelled him to get involved. Maverick was first elected Historian, and then President, of the Proctor Plaza Neighborhood Association and the Norhill Historic District. In recognition of his tireless leadership in the community, Maverick was elected Proctor Plaza Citizen of the Year in 2007.
Maverick decided to take on more political service, first managing Council Member Peter Brown’s re-election campaign and then serving as his Chief of Staff. As Chief of Staff, Maverick helped form Council Member Brown’s agenda and worked tirelessly for the people of the City. Maverick’s work helped lead to the creation of the Mayor’s Task Force for Electric Reliability. He has experience in working for better community development with the Lower Fifth Ward and Washington Avenue Revitalization Projects. After Hurricane Ike, he coordinated City resources for the POD location at Community of Faith Church.
The job of a City Council member is hard. Maverick has worked with the entire City government - the Mayor, the City Controller, the City Council, and department heads - and knows how to get things done for you. Maverick has the skills necessary to be a champion for District H on day one. Because of his experience, lifelong call to service, and commitment to inclusion, you will be proud Maverick Welsh serves District H on City Council.
Maverick and his partner Daryl Sinkule live in Proctor Plaza with their dog and two cats.
