Maverick Welsh Has New Ideas to Better Fight Crime

THE ISSUE

People are worried about crime, and recent efforts to reduce crime haven’t worked. Houston needs a new, proven approach to policing similar to those taken in other major cities.

MAVERICK’S PLAN

Not only do we need more cops on the street, but we need to re-organize our law enforcement to make it more efficient. A police force should be in touch with the community that it’s protecting, not a bureaucracy run from Downtown. Maverick will work to move Houston to adopt decentralized, neighborhood-oriented policing. Adoption of similar policies dramatically reduced crime rates in New York and Los Angeles. Computer mapping technology can track crime in real-time, helping identify crime patterns as they occur. More importantly, a neighborhood-oriented system engages the public to help with fighting crime through better transparency and accountability. Maverick knows District H and our city need a modern, responsive approach to reduce crime.
