THE ISSUE
It’s outrageous that Houstonians pay up to twice as much for electricity as other Texas cities, and get far less in terms of reliability and service. The City of Houston must fight to lower electricity bills and work to strengthen our power grid.
MAVERICK’S PLAN
There is no reason why Houston should pay considerably more for electricity than Dallas and Austin, and almost twice as much as folks in San Antonio. Also, we experienced how fragile our power grid is when District H went without power for weeks after Hurricane Ike. Since electricity deregulation in 2002, electricity rates have shot up dramatically. Our residents and businesses need relief from these runaway costs, and we deserve better electrical service for our money. We should lower electricity rates for everybody by either regulating existing utilities or through the creation of a municipal utility company. To tackle the problem of reliability, Maverick worked for the creation of the Mayor’s Electric Reliability Task Force during his time at City Hall. Everybody in Houston deserves reliable and affordable electricity.
