Maverick Welsh Believes Houstonians Need More Representation on City Council

THE ISSUE

Everybody in Houston deserves a council member who will listen to them and try to understand their needs. As Houston’s population grows, it’s essential that we add city council seats.

MAVERICK’S PLAN

In 1979, single-member districts were created so that the Houston City Council would be more representative of our city’s diversity. As part of the agreement, the City of Houston created nine single-member districts and five at-large city council seats. Two more single-member districts were supposed to be added once Houston’s population reached 2.1 million. Now that Houston has passed this threshold, we need these districts to be created without delay.
